Magic Jack

I have a program I can use to make phone calls in the US without it costing either my family and me international charges.  However, this wonderful setup seems to have limits.  Not every phone company works.  I tried calling someone down in my hometown and it wouldn't connect.  Evidently there isn't a contract between Craw-Kan and Magic Jack.  All good things have an imperfection it seems.

  1. I am not a technology-type person, but I wonder if the fiber-optic system that was first started more than one or two decades ago back home has anything to do with Magic Jack not working.
It was an experiment in bringing the finest personnel into a rural area: i.e. - the new School of Technology at the PSU campus could have experts from anywhere at fine institutions "beam in" lectures or advice or guide the processes of a project. Also, doctors in the area hospitals could receive instant access to top surgeons and other specialty physicians even while in the middle of a delicate surgery where extra expertise was needed. This fiber-optic system for that area of rural America was to benefit local schools where children could interact with other teachers and students and have the benefit of seeing on screen a lesson project that could not be afforded by all schools everywhere. The fiber-optic system was to eventually be expanded until it was the way telephone communications were handled by businesses and residents in the entire corner of the state. It has been a long time since I have heard how it would work and what all it entailed and would be able to do that was not yet available by any other means back then, but the computer users seem to be quite happy with their high-speed internet access - emphasis on "HIGH-SPEED". I was just wondering if that affected how and who Magic Jack users could reach folks, but too, I am wondering if there might be a difference between calling a home phone vs a cell phone number. Lots of questions on that one. Sorry I don't know the answers.

  2. The message I received was that they didn't have a contract with this phone company.

It works via internet. If I have internet, then it can contact you.

  3. Yes. The internet provider for that area is through the phone company, which evidently has not contracted with Magic Jack. The phone company is pretty neat, though - a co-op that pays back to customers a percentage of the profits realized in a year based on the amount of usage each customer has accumulated.
